Movies I've seen lately (other than porn).
Those most recently watched are listed first. Five stars (*****) means
excellent, 1 star (*) means don't waste your time even if it's free.
- Jacob's Ladder: Tim Robbins plays a postal carrier who can't
separate dreams from reality as he passes from Vietnam War flashbacks to
seeing weird demons everywhere he turns. Good acting all around, and the
action carries you all the way through. ****
- Frequency: Another of the Matrix aeon which bears watching again
and again; sunspot activity allows a man to hold amateur-radio conversations
with his fireman father who had died 30 years ago saving a child in a warehouse
fire. Very few weaknesses in this movie. *****
- The Matrix: I keep watching this movie over and over, at least
once a month; can't help it, it's just that good. Lawrence Fishburne,
Keanu Reeves, and Carrie Ann Moss take you on a fast-paced joyride through
a virtual-reality dream we call the universe. *****
- The Sum of all Fears: Now here is a place Ben Affleck does
not belong, in the shoes of Jack Ryan. Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford
both played the role well, though differently; but Affleck's weasel personality
just doesn't fit the bill. The movie could have maybe reached at
least mediocre status but for him, considering the strength of the other
actors and the overall believeability of the plot. But forget it. *
- Changing Lanes: I usually don't like Ben Affleck, but here he
plays a part that for some reason he fits into very well: a sleazebag lawyer.
Samuel L. Jackson is always good, but sometimes, as here, he is too strong
for the relatively weak character (an insurance salesman with a drinking
problem) he is trying to portray. Overall, though,
the movie was very well done. ****
